In 2002, aged 18, I visited a comic shop in Bristol. In recent months the Dreamwave G1 comics had rekindled my interest in Transformers, as had getting a VHS of the '86 Movie for the first time in a decade, but there was still an element of uncertainty over this re-connection. These were still kids' toys, right? Ironic detachment was the order of the day.
That was all about to change.
As soon as I saw the Dreamwave Comics G1 Dinobot poster, shown above, I had to get it there and then. Once home, it went straight up on my bedroom wall.
No irony about it; I loved - and still freakin' love - these robot dino bozos. This gorgeous Pat Lee art quickly became my definitive image of them.
Within months I had my first new Transformer in about a decade, the 2002 reissue of G1 Hot Rod. I wasn't quite a full blown adult collector - that was going to take a few more years - but the die had been cast...
A day or so after I shared this story on Instagram, @toys_stagram posted this incredible Diaclone advert...
Fast rolling, fire breathing, Kaiju-smashing... That might give you a taste of why I love the G1 Dinobots so much!
Anyway. That's how one awesome piece of artwork heralded the rekindling of my passion for the Transformers. How did your own collecting dark ages end? Or were you one of those lucky/determined sods that never stopped?!
